Fish are Friends- NOT Food.
Normally, I think new year's resolutions are overrated, I mean, who actually keeps their's up? Well, I'm going to start 2011 with an easy resolution by eating healthier. It seems like an easy task, since I am the most unhealthy eater EVER. Over Christmas break, I, along with 12 family members, traveled to Belize for two weeks. We stayed on the island, Ambergris Caye; islands usually mean pretty blue water, friendly people, and fish will be the only food on the menus. I have never been more correct about something in my life; the water was the prettiest water I've ever laid my eyes on, the people were the friendliest people I've ever been around, and fish was on every menu of every restaurant we went to. I tend to go by Nemo's friend, Bruce's, philosophy of "fish are friends- NOT food." (Off of Finding Nemo). Therefore, I ate no fish for the entire vacation. I looked at fish, swam with fish, watched islanders cook fish, but I never actually ate a fish. I would be very, very lucky if a restaurant had pasta or chicken on the menu. Sometimes I would even ask for a special menu with hamburgers and steak, or my all-time favorite- grilled cheese!!! But after my first few bites of a steak I had one night, I realized I need to never eat a hamburger or steak from Belize. Ew, that's a different story. But, that was 2010. This is 2011. New Year's Day was my last day in Belize, once I got back to the states I realized I need to try new things, such as eating healthier, (since I stocked up on chips, french fries and Dr. Pepper for the entire vacation). I noticed that all of the islanders who looked like they would be 20, were actually 40. I assume it's because all they eat is fish, rice, and beans. I want to look as healthy as they do when I'm older, and it's because they eat healthy; however, I will not be adding fish to my lifestyle anytime soon. Maybe in the future? Stay tuned for my first step to changing my eating habits.
